Motorcycle Unit
The motorcycle unit is assigned to the Day Watch and conducts
collision investigations during rush hours. Their other time
is spent enforcing traffic law in high-frequency collision
locations.
Motorcycles are also used to assist in traffic control at
major incidents where a crash or some other major event such
as a chemical spill has significantly impacted traffic flow
in a given area.
Each deputy provides his own motorcycle and is reimbursed
by Harris County in the form of an allowance. Harris County
also provides markings and radios for the motorcycles.
A deputy must first pass a 40-hour certification course in
Police Motorcycle Operation before being allowed to ride on-duty.
These courses are taught by instructors assigned to the Motorcycle
Unit who have attended the 120-hour Police Motorcycle Instructor
course. This course is jointly sponsored by Harley-Davidson
and Northwestern University.
