Beats
The Beat Program was established to meet the growing and changing
demands for police services within the unincorporated areas
of Harris County. Whereas the unincorporated areas of Harris
County have increased in both per capita population and business
density, the demand for police service has increased proportionately.
In striving to meet these demands the Harris County Sheriff's
Department, in cooperation with Harris County Commissioners
Court, has increased the Sheriff's Department's patrol services
to accommodate these demands. The concept of Community Oriented
Policing is the cornerstone of the Beat Program. In this type
of policing, both the deputy patrolling and the neighborhoods
being patrolled benefit by a closer relationship between the
Sheriff's Department, the Patrol Deputy, and the neighborhood.
A major advantage to the Beat Program is the smaller area of
responsibility. The smaller area of responsibility will enable
the Patrol Deputy to respond faster and more efficiently resulting
in a greatly reduced response time. A greater familiarity by
the Patrol Deputy of the area, trends, activities, residents,
businesses, and known criminals will result in a higher crime
clearance rate. All of these elements combined create a more
efficient and more compassionate relationship between law enforcement
and the community.
