Detention
The Detention System of the Harris County Sheriff's Office is divided into two
commands with three main jail facilities:
- The
1200 Baker Jail
- The
701 San Jacinto Jail
- The 1307 Baker Jail
Some Quick Facts:
- At any one time, the Detention System houses over 7,000
inmates. These inmates generally include pretrial felony
and misdemeanor defendants, post-conviction misdemeanants
serving county time, post-conviction felons awaiting transfer
to the Texas
Department of Criminal Justice as well as inmates
bench-warranted from TDCJ for court appearances, fugitives
awaiting transport out of the county or state and prisoners
awaiting return to military authorities.

- The Detention System is staffed with approximately
1500 men and women certified as detention officers or
peace officers (sheriff's deputies) by the Texas
Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Training
(TCLEOSE).
- Each of the three main jails, the 1200 Jail, the 701
Jail and the 1307 Jail, have a modern kitchen facilities
that together prepare approximately 25,000 hot meals per
day. A registered dietician makes up each day's menu to
ensure inmates receive a proper diet. Special meals are
prepared for inmates with medical, dietary or religious
requirements.
- The 1200 Jail and the 701 Jail, in partnership with
the University
of Texas Health Science Center, have well-equipped
medical clinics open twenty-four hours per day and seven
days a week. These clinics treat inmates' minor medical
complaints and injuries; a medical doctor is on duty at
all times. Nurses make rounds of each cellblock and ensure
inmates received medications prescribed by doctors. Should
additional chronic or emergency care be required, inmates
are sent to appropriate facilities operated by the Harris
County Hospital District.
- Approximately 600 inmates are transferred to various
courts in the Houston area each Monday through Friday.
In 2002, approximately 111,110 inmates were booked into
the Detention System and 107,596 were booked out. Approximately
18,040 inmates were transferred to other detention environments.
